What do you need? Solution:
Strong dog fence The recommended specification for keeping dogs safe is a welded wire mesh with a 50mm x 50mm hole size and at least a 2mm thick wire (14 gauge). Our European made 50mm x 50mm 14g welded mesh Dog Fence is the ideal product for most dog fencing projects, manufactured to European Standards EN 10223-4.
Mesh for very strong / larger dog If you have a very large dog, or a particularly strong dog prone to jumping up against the fence, then you may wish to opt for a heavier-duty welded wire mesh in either a 50mm x 50mm 12g (2.5mm thick wire) or a 50mm x 50mm 10g (3mm thick wire).
Mesh for a small dog or puppy We would still recommend using our 50mm x 50mm 14g Weld Mesh for smaller dogs, as the hole size will still be suitable. For puppies, the 14 gauge mesh will be strong enough even as they grow.
Mesh for a fence boundary If you are looking to install a rigid fence on your boundary, the 50mm x 50mm 14 gauge Mesh is a great option. If you want to add further security, then the heavier weight 50mm x 50mm 12g Weld Mesh and 50mm x 50mm 10g Weld Mesh options offer an even stronger fence. If you are looking for a lightweight and flexible fencing to cover gaps in an existing hedge, then a Chicken Wire Netting may be more suitable as it is easier to mould to the shape of the hedge.
Mesh for a dog run 50mm x 50mm 14g Welded Wire Mesh is also a good choice for dog runs, as it can be stapled directly onto wooden posts or stakes. Dog runs for larger / very strong dogs may require heavier-weight 50mm x 50mm 12g Welded Mesh and 50mm x 50mm 10g Welded Mesh.
Cheap dog fence Dog fencing needs to be strong enough to be fit for purpose, and so we wouldn’t recommend opting for a lightweight fencing unless the mesh is intended to cover gaps in an existing hedge. Therefore, we recommend using at least a 2mm thick wire (14 gauge). Our 50mm x 50mm 14g Weld Mesh is a very high-quality product, however we believe that it represents excellent value for money as a long-term dog proofing solution.
Mesh to stop digging To deter digging at the boundary of your fence, you can use Heavy Duty Ground Pegs to secure Chicken Wire flat on the ground. Alternatively, you can bury your Dog Fencing down into the ground at the boundary.

Dog Fencing Frequently Asked Questions
Do wire fences work for dogs?
Yes! Wire fences work for dogs of all sizes. Our 50mm x 50mm hole 14g welded wire metal dog fencing is perfect for small, medium, and large dogs. For strong and very large dogs, we offer a heavier 50mm x 50mm hole 12g welded mesh.
What is the best mesh for dogs in gardens?
We recommend using a strong, weather-resistant mesh in gardens such as galvanised steel wire mesh. 50mm x 50mm hole 14g weld mesh is a sturdy and chew-proof mesh making it ideal for escape-proofing your garden.
What is the best mesh for dogs in fields?
A 50mm x 50mm hole 14g welded mesh is a great choice for dog fencing in fields. If you have a very large area to fence, then you may want to consider using our chain link fence and post system. Make sure you select our heavier-duty chain-link as it is more robust for dog fencing.
How high should a fence be for dogs?
The best height for your dog fence depends on the size and breed of your dog, their tendency to jump, and whether there is an additional barrier above the fencing such as a hedge. A fence which is 1.2m (4ft) to 1.5m (5ft) high is a popular option for dog fencing. If you have a dog prone to jumping then you may wish to install a taller fence around 1.8m to 2m high. This additional height can be achieved using two runs of 1m (40 inch) high dog fence to prevent escape. Please keep in mind any planning restrictions which may apply to fence heights at your property.
How do I dog-proof my garden?
Install dog fencing to keep dogs in or out of your garden. You should also consider burying the mesh fencing so that they can’t dig underneath it, or using chicken wire and ground pegs to make a skirt as an additional barrier to digging.
Do you need special wire for a dog fence?
A galvanised steel wire is recommended for dog fences because it is durable, weather-resistant, chew-proof, and long-lasting. Wire dog fences fitted using fencing posts will provide sturdy protection for your dogs. Always fit the wire mesh on the inside of the fence posts to provide more support should the dogs push their body weight against the fence.
